Celebrating Anniversaries

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV

As my parents, Jimmy and Mardi, prepare to celebrate their 54th anniversary on June 27th, and my husband John and I anticipate our 23rd anniversary on July 1st, I am reminded of the timeless words penned by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. These verses encapsulate the essence of enduring love, serving as a guiding light for our relationships.

Love is patient. Over the course of 54 years, my parents have displayed incredible patience with each other. They have weathered storms, embraced joys, and stood side by side through thick and thin. Their love has been a source of strength and encouragement, especially during my mother’s courageous battle with melanoma. Through it all, their patience has exemplified the true meaning of enduring love.

Love is kind. In the 23 years of our marriage, my husband John has consistently shown me kindness. Whether through his thoughtful gestures, words of encouragement, or acts of selflessness, he exemplifies the kindness that Paul spoke of. His love and support have been unwavering, especially during my struggles with Crohn’s disease. Though it’s hard to believe, sometimes I’m not all that loveable, but John treats me with kindness anyway- even when I don’t deserve it.

Love never fails. Despite the uncertainties and hardships we have faced, love has remained our rock. It has carried us through times of sickness, job loss, hurt feelings, deaths in our families. As the scripture says, “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

In honor of our upcoming anniversaries, let us celebrate the love that has endured through the years. May we be inspired by 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 to cultivate patience, kindness, and a love that never fails in our own relationships. Let us cherish the memories we have created, learn from the challenges we have faced, and continue to grow in love day by day.
