I have recently become hooked on Julie Klassen\’s books, and this one didn\’t disappoint. Set in a coastal Cornish town, A Castaway in Cornwall checked all the boxes for me! There was romance, inspiration, intrigue, and a satisfying ending.
Laura Callaway has herself been a castaway of sorts. Relegated to life with her uncle in Cornwall after her parents\’ deaths, she\’s trying to find her own path. She salvages items from shipwrecks and restores them, and when a handsome, injured stranger washes ashore, she does the same for him. Alex has secrets, though. Is he who Laura thinks he is? Can she trust him?
I enjoyed everything about this book, which surprised me because there was so much detail about the sea and shipwrecks in the beginning. I worried that would distract me from the story. However, Klassen wove those details in and I ended up learning so much! All of the characters were multi-dimensional, which I really enjoyed. We were able to root for the good guys but still feel compassion toward the villains.
Aside from the stunning cover, my favorite thing about this book, and what will stick with me most, is the parallel between Laura\’s tendency to rescue and restore lost items and the way God redeems us, even when circumstances seem impossible. Like her Savior, Laura was able to see the beauty in items others would have tossed aside. I love the way Julie Klassen tells us the gospel story in subtleties and with beautifully penned images. Well done!!
5/5 Stars!
