“I am leaving you with a gift, peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27

“O Holy Night” is a beautiful Christmas song that celebrates the night of Christ’s birth. My favorite part in the song goes “Long lay the world in sin and error pining/ Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth/ A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices/ For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!”

I’m not sure about you, but I get weary of all the trouble in the world. Between COVID, politics, injustice, human suffering, and global conflict, it feels like the trouble will never end. This isn’t a new feeling. On the night when Jesus was born, the world was mired in political and social unrest that had lasted for centuries. His people were waiting for the Prince of Peace to come and settle matters once and for all.

What they got wasn’t quite what they expected. Instead of some majestic, powerful king charging in with an army following Him, they got a baby. He didn’t have teeth and couldn’t hold His head up. How could He bring peace to a world full of strife?

The peace that Jesus brings is different than we might have expected. It is an internal peace that we can’t get anywhere else. The more time we spend with Him, the more that peace washes over us. That doesn’t mean that the problems of the world go away. It just means that we can trust that God will work everything out in the end. We can rest in the peace that Christ gifted us.
